In the spirit of the E Street Band, Set Lusting Bruce has a team of regular guests who have made multiple appearances, where they bring the stories, the humor, the emotion, podcast, after podcast. Here is the Mary Question Answering, Time Zone Juggling, Skype Using, Story Telling Set Lusting Bruce – Hall of Fame!
‘It’s been my privilege to have been repeatedly invited to join Jesse on the Setlusting Bruce podcast – always a treat and a pleasure to have his welcoming company online. A Bruce fan since 1978, I started and produced the UK fanzine ‘Point Blank’ in the 1980s (all issues now available online), and have been lucky to make many dear friends and enjoy numerous adventures on the road since 1981. In recent years my motto has been: Friends, Music, Travel.’
At the risk of sounding cliche–“Thunder Road” changed my life. I’m a writer, teacher, storyteller, speaker, father, husband and medical mystery who deeply believes in a promise land. Bruce’s music continues to offer me perspective, gentle reminders, and sometimes–the swift kick-in-the butt I need. As a literature teacher, I often deconstruct lyrics to build a better understanding of the mysterious yet universal human experience. Because music, like literature, is simply a medium– a microphone that begs us to roll down the windows, scream into the abyss, and prove our aliveness.
Grew up in PA, consider myself from Chicago, live in TX. First saw Bruce in 1988 on the Tunnel of Love tour in Atlanta. Got my tickets from my boss who we thought was this crazy guy traveling around the country and world to Springsteen shows. Then no shows until the Reunion tour in 1999 – reason – no cash and no time! Going to shows really started with the Magic Tour and I’m now at 28 shows. We love going to shows for three reasons – the great songs, not knowing what song is next and the friends we have made all around the world. We have gone to Europe and followed the tour twice – 2012 and 2015 – and they were our best vacations ever. Highlights have been the SXSW show since we lived there and Gothenburg 2015 – the short 3 hour 58 minute show with 38 songs. That was a special night for us as it was her first pit after a long medical fight. Can’t forget about the epic night on Broadway either! We look forward to a 2020 tour and the possibility of a new ESB record. Until then we are enjoying Western Stars and the soundtrack to our lives through Bruce’s music. General stuff – married to Jo for 35 years, one daughter, two grandchildren. Work for Westenr Container for almost 16 years supplying Coca-Cola with plastic bottles. Other than Bruce love music and sports. If we aren’t at a show we are at Minute Maid Park or the Toyota Center. Fortunately the “real” boss loves music and sports as well!
I am lucky enough to have been a fan of Bruce since early 1974 when, as a 16-year-old living in Liverpool, UK, I would listen to Kid Jensen playing tracks from The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle. My first gig was May 1981 and that was the first of 48 shows, in 10 different countries and over 3 continents. Those shows and following Bruce is one of the highlights of my life not just because of Bruce, his music and the incredible live shows but also because of the great people I have met along the way, the joy I have shared and the lifelong friendships I have made. One such friendship is with the marvelous Jesse Jackson. I was a guest on SLB in June 2018 and have been a guest several times since as Jesse has unselfishly supported and encouraged my own Podcast ambitions. Almost a year to the day after appearing on SLB I launched my own Podcast, Music Talks http://musictalkspod.buzzsprout.com/ where guests choose a song from each decade of their life and tell their story. I love doing it, get great pleasure and fulfillment from it and it wouldn’t have happened without Jesse (or Bruce!)

I never anticipated when I started the Springsteen news blog Blogness on the Edge of Town (blogness-brucespringsteen.net) — pretty much on a whim — that I would get to know a bevy of actual human people through it, people I now call colleagues and friends, like “Set Lusting Bruce” host Jesse Jackson. Bruce Springsteen — is there anything he can’t do??
It didn’t hurt that it seems the world was primed and ready for a Bruce Springsteen blog in 2007, shortly after the release of “Magic” and just as he was kicking off his massive tour in support of that album. It wasn’t long before it led me into a circle of music lovers too numerous to name who’ve become part of the fabric of what we do at Blogness on the Edge of Town: Celebrate the power, glory and majesty of the work of Bruce Springsteen, whose music has touched us all in different ways over the years.
I can’t quite remember what I wrote in the first-ever Blogness post, now annihilated in a massive server crash a few years back, but I think it had something to do with providing a place where Springsteen fans could come congregate, celebrate and, where appropriate, agitate over the latest Bruce news and our fondest Springsteen memories. I think we’ve done that, and I’m grateful to those who’ve come and stuck around. I would have never predicted having so many good companions for this part of the ride.

A cybernetic organism or “cyborg” is defined as an organism with both biological and technological components. However, in a technical sense, humans can be seen as cyborgs in various types of situations.
Well, this is how I often describe my hero. Bruce Springsteen’s music, integrity and unparalleled passion has forever changed me as a man, husband, son, friend and also as a clinician (I may or may not have given my patients Springsteen related assignments
That music, those lyrics, the dedication to a craft has heavily influenced the way I look at myself, my relationships and the world in general. I believe brilliant art can be that impactful.
Jesse, I am honored to be a part of the SLB All Stars. As Bruce would say, you are “out there on the front lines doing God’s work,” by creating a wonderful forum for people to commune every week. You are delivering an act of service by putting something beautiful out there in the universe. It has been an honor to be on 3 episodes and looking forward to our next conversation.
I have seen the future of great music podcasts….
