It’s all about Fathers and Sons – Blinded by the Light

Tim, Rob, Jeff, Nancy, me, Ron, Scott at AMC Grapevine 30

Tonight I and several other local Springsteen fans met up at the AMC Grapevine Theater to watch the new Springsteen themed movie – Blinded by the Light. the move was based on the book, Greeting from Bury Park: A Memoir by Sarfraz Manzoor. The writer Sarfraz has been very active on social media working hard to promote the movie. If you are a Springsteen fan, I’m sure you have heard of the movie and you’ve been looking forward to seeing it. Here is a few quick thoughts.

I loved the movie. I don’t know if I wasn’t a Springsteen fan if I would love it as much as I do. The main character Javed played by Viveik Kalra becomes obsessed/passionate about Bruce’s music. He would be a perfect guest for Set Lusting Bruce. Springsteen’s music helps him to discover his own creative voice, find the courage to talk to his long time crush and to stand up for himself.

The relationship between Javed and his father, played by Kulvinder Ghir is at the core of the film (and in many ways at the core of Manzoor’s book). There are echos of Adam Raised a Cain (not in the film), My Father’s House (not in the film) and of course Independence Day (in the film). The lyrics of The Promised Land are used very effectively and help to move the story along. In fact the film uses Springsteen words often and they appear on screen to make a point.

I’m curious what a non-fan will think of the film. I think they will enjoy it. We all have something we are passionate about and something that helped us cope with the pain of family and growing up (at least I hope so). As a fan, I found the film moving and I was brought to tears multiple times. My son, Chris was sitting next to me and often he reached over and grabbed my hand. I will be going to see it again.

There is a scene (which is in the trailer) where Javed’s friends Roop gives him two Springsteen cassettes, one Born in the USA and the other Darkness on the Edge of Town. The next time Javed sees Roop, he quotes The River. The multiple Springsteen fans I watched it with afterwards, pointed that out and we all decided that Javed went out and purchased other Springsteen cassettes before he saw Roop again.

Several local Springsteen fans met me before the show and we got to share drinks and stories. We had a great time and we are planning a repeat performance in October when Western Stars is released, but more about that later.

I give the film 10 out of 10 Born To Run Dance Sequences.

Sharing salsa, margaritas and Springsteen stories

Jo, Dale, Jesse, Linda, Nancy, Jeff

One of the things I love about doing the podcast is developing relationships with other Springsteen fans. In most cases, these friendships are virtual. We exchange twitter comments, we talk via Skype for the podcast, we IM each other in Facebook and sometimes we even email each other! Every once in a while, I get the chance to turn an online friend to a real world meet up and that was the case on Monday 8/12/19. Dale and Jo Hosack were up from Houston being great Grandparents. Linda and I took advantage of their visit to DFW to meet up with Nancy and Jeff Calaway, Dale and Jo to enjoy some wonderful Tex-Mex. We had a great time talking Bruce, children, grandchildren, tours, Billy Gibbons, Vegas and songs we are all chasing. Getting to spend time with such a wonder group was a great way to start the week. The hope is that soon we will meet again but this time a a show!
